Cancer and Genetics: Is Cancer a Genetic Disease and Can Testing Help?

A cancer diagnosis for anyone is a challenge, but can genetic testing or counseling shed light on this very complex disease? Can the genes we are born with predispose to certain cancer types? What can you do proactively if you have a family history of a certain cancer type? Is a blood test necessary, can you just do a risk assessment? Register for this informative session to learn how genetic counseling and testing for cancer can benefit you or a loved one concerned about a future cancer diagnosis.

Session participants will understand:

  • What to expect from genetic counseling and testing
  • What is an inherited predisposition to cancer
  • Who is appropriate for genetic testing
  • How might genetic testing alter cancer screenings or treatment
  • Discuss benefits and risks of genetic testing

Presenter:

Kimberly Brussow, MS, CGC, Certified Genetic Counselor at Dignity Health – Cancer Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center

Kimberly Brussow is board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. She has extensive experience in cancer genetic counseling, and makes it her goal to support informed decision making and coping for those determined to be at risk for cancer after genetic testing. In addition to her expertise in hereditary cancer, Kimberly also brings her unique experience with genomic technology into the clinic. Kimberly received a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology from the University of California, San Diego. She received a Master of Science degree in Genetic Counseling from the University of California, Irvine. In her personal time,

Kimberly is often playing viola, catching a hockey game, or enjoying time with her husband and dogs.
