Using Your Workplace to Educate Men about Prostate Cancer

Though the overall incidence of prostate cancer is on the decline nationwide, in Arizona prostate cancer continues to be one of the leading causes of death for men. Many employees and their spouses have questions about prostate cancer – Who should be screened and when? What does a diagnosis mean for the future? What are the different available treatment options?

The workplace may be one of the best places to get answers to many of these questions. Employers are in a unique position to increase their employee’s awareness of prostate cancer and how to approach it in regards to screening, diagnosis, and treatment. Learn how you can increase your employees’ knowledge about prostate cancer by providing key information that guides them to an informed decision.

  • Review screening guidelines and the diagnosis of prostate cancer
  • Assess the aggressiveness of prostate cancer

Presenter:

Shyamal Patel, MD

Radiation Oncologist, The University of Arizona Cancer Center at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center

Dr. Shyamal Patel is board-certified in radiation oncology and has clinical expertise in brachytherapy. Dr. Patel’s expertise includes the management of genitourinary, head and neck, and skin cancers. His extensive training in high-dose-rate brachytherapy provides him with a highly effective way to treat prostate cancers. He provides his patients with all potential options and tailors treatment recommendations to the patient within a context of evidence–based medicine.

Dr. Patel received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his internship in medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and subsequently his residency in radiation oncology at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY. He then completed his fellowship in brachytherapy at the University of California, Los Angeles under the mentorship of one of the pioneers of prostate high-dose-rate brachytherapy. His extensive training provides him with unique and highly effective treatment modalities.
