Journey from Prediabetes to Diabetes- Prevention and Treatment

Diabetes is a complex, expensive, chronic illness requiring continuous medical care with multifactorial risk-reduction strategies beyond glycemic control. According to CDC report in 2020, 34.5% of all US adults had prediabetes and 26.9 million people of all ages, which is 8.2% of the US population—had been diagnosed diabetes. a. One in 10 adults in Arizona have type 2 diabetes (T2), 1 in 3 adults have prediabetes, Approximately 600,000 adults in Arizona have been diagnosed with diabetes, or 10.1% of the Arizona adult population. It is estimated that the annual cost of diagnosed diabetes in the U.S. in 2017 was $327 billion, including $237 billion in direct medical costs and $90 billion in reduced productivity.

There are ways to prevent progression from Prediabetes to diabetes and preventing complications associated with Diabetes. In Last few years there is a new paradigm in terms of diabetes and prediabetes management including technology and Pharmacotherapy which might help to reduce the burden of the disease.

About our speaker:

Kajalben Buddhdev , MD

Kajalben Buddhdev, MD is an endocrinologist with Dignity Health Medical Group, working within DHMG Specialty Medicine – St. Joseph’s at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center campus.

Dr. Buddhdev’s expertise includes all aspects of diabetes, insulin pumps, thyroid ultrasound and biopsy, thyroid cancers, osteoporosis, hypogonadism, pituitary disorders, neuroendocrine tumors, etc. She is a member ofEndocrine Society and American Thyroid Association.
Dr. Buddhdev received her Bachelor of Medicine & Surgery degree with distinction from C U Shah Medical College in India. She later moved to the United States where she completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Abington Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, PA.

She went on to pursue a diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism fellowship at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska where she also dedicated an additional year as a basic science and clinical research fellow after completing her endocrinology fellowship. Her research interests include thyroid cancer and bariatric weight loss.
